Selecting an Outdoor Lighting Company

Residential Outdoor Landscape Lighting Your investment in an exterior lighting system should only be made once.  The following are a few tips that will help you make an informed decision when selecting a lighting company.

SPECIALIZATION – Does the company specialize in outdoor lighting or are they a “Jack of all trades” performing work in such areas as irrigation, landscaping, grass cutting, etc.?

YEARS IN BUSINESS – You will be relying on this company to add, revise, and maintain your lighting system. Will they be in operation 2, 10, or 20 years from now?  We average two or three calls per week from homeowners requesting maintenance on their low voltage or line voltage lighting systems that were installed by companies that have gone out of business.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE COMPANY – Did you receive literature in the mail or are you familiar with their work and reputation?

EXPERIENCE OF DESIGNERS – Does your designer have years of experience in lighting design or did he/she simply attend a one day seminar sponsored by a fixture manufacturer.

TYPES OF SYSTEMS INSTALLED – Can the company design and install a lighting system ideally suited for your property?  Are they able to install low voltage, line voltage, or a combination of both?

LONG TERM VS. SHORT TERM COST – Ask your designer about the long term cost of maintaining the proposed lighting system.  Contrary to popular belief, a low voltage system is not as energy efficient as a line voltage system.  Also, low voltage lamps do not last nearly as long as the long life lamps found in a line voltage system.

QUALITY OF EQUIPMENT – Are the lighting fixtures made of high quality material such as cast aluminum, brass, or copper?

MAINTENANCE – Does the company have dedicated full-time personnel available to maintain your system?  Does the company stock an extensive inventory of lighting hardware or do they purchase lighting equipment when needed, hoping it will be available?  Will they respond to your requests for maintenance?

WILL THEY LISTEN TO YOUR IDEAS AND GOALS – Your lighting system should be designed for your enjoyment and should incorporate your lighting needs and desires.

PROFESSIONALISM OF PERSONNEL – Everyone involved in your lighting project including lighting designers, field personnel, and office staff should always act in a professional and courteous manner.

INSURANCE – For your protection, Workers Compensation and Liability insurance should be carried by the lighting company you select.
